Charyn Canyon
Highlights of these two day or weekend trips from Almaty into the countryside:
– Charyn Canyon, Altyn Emel and the Kolsai Lakes, Assy Plateau, all wonders of nature
– in summer months, the nomads, yurts & horses en route
– option: stay in a yurt in Charyn Canyon
You travel with a guide-driver for two days in the province of Almaty, with start and finish in that city. (A finish at the Almaty airport is also possible).
This part of Kazakhstan has a great diversity of landscapes, which you can experience in these three days.
There are some variations possible. You can choose to include the Altyn Emel Nature Park in the program, a landscape of semi-desert north of the Kapachagai lake and the Ili River. In summer it’s pretty hot. Or Charyn Canyon, usually part of any two-day tour in this area. The Kolsai Lakes and also Temerlik Canyon are good options as well.

A visa is not necessary for a visit of up to 30 days to Kazakhstan for most countries.

Route 1
Aktau and Kakatau mountains in Altyn Emel
Almaty-Altyn Emel National Park-Almaty
Total distance: approx. 700 kms from which 210 kms off-road
Day 1: Departure from Almaty.
Transfer to Altyn-Emel pass 240 km, 3.5 hours.
Lunch at a roadside café.
Transfer to Basshy village. Buying tickets to the Altyn-Emel national Park.
Transfer to the Singing Barkhan.
Walking around the Singing Barkhan 2hours.
Transfer into the hotel near Basshy village 30min.
Rest. Shower. Supper. Sleep.
Day 2: Transfer to the Aktau Mountains (1.5 hours).
Dirt road. Walking around the mountains for 2 hours.
Return to the guest house.
Lunch at the guest house.
Return to Almaty Total time 5.5 hours including stops.
Route 2
Almaty-Charyn Canyon-Kolsai Lakes-Almaty
Total distance: approx. 600 kms from which 100 kms off-road
Day 1: Departure from Almaty.
Transfer to the Bayseit village, 2.5 hours.
Lunch at a roadside café.
Transfer to the Charyn canyon, 1 hour.
Walking around the Charyn canyon, 2 hours.
Transfer to the Saty willage, 3 hour.
Stop for a night at the guest house in the Sati village.
Rest. Russian sauna. Supper. Sleep.
Day 2: Waking up, full breakfast.
Transfer to the Kolsay lake, 50 min. Dirt road.
Walking around the lake for 2 hours.
Return to Sati. Lunch at the guest house.
Transfer to Kaindy lake 1.15 hours. Dirt road.
Walking around the lake for 2 hours.
Return to Almaty 6 hours including stops, there will be a stop at the Baiseit village for a light meal.
Route 3
Yurt camp at Charyn Canyon
Almaty-Charyn Canyon-Temerlik Canyon-Almaty
Total distance: approx. 430 kms from which 70 kms off-road
Day 1: Departure from Almaty in the morning.
Transfer to the Bayseit village, 2.5 hours.
Lunch at a roadside café.
Transfer to the canyon Charyn, 1 hour.
Walking around the canyon Charyn 2 hours.
Transfer to the canyon Temirlik, 2 hours.
Camping. Walking. Rest. Bonfire. Supper. Sleep.
Day 2: Waking up, breakfast.
Walking to the crossing of Temirlik and Charyn rivers.
Lunch in the camp.
Collecting camp.
Transfer to the canyon which is named “Grand Canyon” and visiting “Yellow Canyon”. Return to Almaty 4 hours including stops, there will be a stop at the Baiseit village for a light meal.
Route 4
Assy Plateau
Almaty-Charyn Canyon-Assy Plateau-Almaty
Total distance: approx. 400 kms from which 120 kms off-road
Day 1: Departure from Almaty in the morning.
Transfer to the Bayseit village, 2.5 hours.
Lunch at a roadside café.
Transfer to the Charyn canyon, 1 hour.
Walking around the Charyn canyon, 2 hours.
Transfer to the Bartagoy reservoir to the starting point of the climbing to the Assy plateau, and then to a picturesque place in the trees shadow near the Assy river 3 hours.
Camping. Walking. Rest. Bonfire. Supper. Sleep.
Day 2: Waking up, breakfast.
Collecting camp.
Crossing the Assy plateau and transfer to the descent to the Turgen valley, 5 hours. Lunch on the Assy plateau.
Stop not far from Medvezhiy waterfall, in the Turgen valley. Excursion to the waterfall, 1.5 hours. Light lunch.
Return to Almaty.
