Under the reign of its former President, Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan turned into a reclusive and strange country. It has a rich past, is covered by sandy deserts while below the surface enormous volumes of natural gas haven been discovered. After the decease of the Leader in 2006 the country has somewhat opened up, while the reverance has stopped, but Turkmenistan remains a remarkable country.

The attractions of Turkmenistan are the traditionally minded (and often also traditionally dressed) Turkmen people, the rich past and its tangible remains, as well as the contrasts of the capital Ashgabat.
