The Mysterious Zhungar Mountains

The Zhungar Mountains stretch over a distance of 300 km along the border with China, at some 300 km from Almaty. The highest peak is 4,622 m.

This mountain range has been named after the feared Zhungars, a tribe from northwestern China with whom the Kazakh tribes have fought several wars. Because of the strategic position of this mountain range - the border zone with China - it is only accessible with a special permit. Therefore few people live here and the area has seen little development. From the positive side, flora and fauna have been little touched by human (mis)behaviour.
